CIC CLI Conference 2010: Home Page

Scholarly communication is the umbrella term used to describe the process of academics, scholars and researchers sharing and publishing their research findings so that they are available to the wider academic community and beyond. The dissemination of scholarly work is a complex system that involves issues such as ownership, copyright, pricing, and long-term preservation of knowledge.  Universities are called to support and enable broad dissemination of research and scholarship both for societal good and to share the results of investments made using public, governmental and private resources.

Over the 2009-2010 academic year, the CIC libraries have been engaged in a collective environmental scan for scholarly communication. The purpose of the scan is to document the state of scholarly publishing and to gather institution-specific information about relevant departmental policies, faculty member activities, and on-campus scholarly publishing. As a result, librarians are better prepared to work with faculty to share best practices in publishing, to promote awareness of author’s rights, and to engage in discussions about new models of disseminating scholarship.

The 2010 CLI Conference will highlight the results of the environmental scan, not only with results from individual institutions but also drawing on trends and initiatives across ten research universities. The conference program will also build on the scan to address broader issues and emerging roles for libraries in the scholarly communication chain.

Some of the questions that will be examined during the conference:

  • What successful initiatives can scale to adoption across many universities?
  • How can the CIC leverage current investments in projects such as Google Books scanning and the HathiTrust Shared Digital Repository to support new forms of publishing?
  • How does the library redefine its role when it acts as both purchaser and publisher?
