About the CIOs
The CIC Chief Information Officers (CIOs) meet quarterly to discuss
high-level strategic issues in information technology of broad
general and mutual interest to the group. They also endorse and
support inter-institutional groups comprised of their senior staff
members responsible for the broad technology areas under the auspices
of most CIOs. The sharing of information and best practices within
and among these sub-groups, in turn, serves to help inform the
CIC CIOs about strategic issues of importance on their campuses.
The chairs of these sub-groups, along with select other related
groups, constitute the Technology Coordination Committee (TCC).
The CIOs also sponsor the CIC TechForum to bring together the
inter-institutional Information Technology community in a biennial
working and educational meeting.
The CIC CIOs first began meeting together as members of the Board
of Directors of CICNet, Inc., a broadband telecommunications systems
established in July, 1988 that provided member CIC institutions
and others with highspeed connectivity. CICNet, Inc. was eventually
sold in 1997. However, in 1995 the CIC CIOs began meeting together,
recognizing the value of communication and collaboration beyond
that of CICNet. They identified collaborative strategic initiatives,
created and charged Working Groups and Task Forces, and created
a Technical Steering Committee to coordinate their activities.
In 2002, the CIC CIOs changed their focus and that of their sub-groups
away from inter-institutional projects and toward sharing information
and best practices about strategic issues in information technology
of broad general and mutual interest to large research institutions.
Accordingly, the Technical Steering Committee became the Technology
Coordination Committee.
The Technology
Coordination Committee (TCC) is comprised of the chairs of
all the CIO endorsed or supported groups along with liaisons from
select related groups and is chaired by the past-chair of the
CIC CIOs. This group submits status reports twice per year to share current activities of their respective groups.
The groups endorsed and/or supported by the CIOs reflect the broad technology areas for which most CIOs are responsible. They include:
Administrative Information Systems (AIS)
Deputy CIOs
IT Communciations
IT Customer Support Services
IT Financial
IT Human Resources
IT Networking
IT Operations & Infrastructure
IT Research Computing
IT Security
Learning Technologies
Videoconferencing
These groups are self-organizing in that they determine the own
frequency of meeting, chair, mode of meeting (video, teleconferencing,
f2f), etc.
Other groups currently participating on the TCC are the IT Accessibility and Usability Group, an advisory group to the CIOs, and the Library
Information Technology Directors.
