Lorcan Dempsey's recent (Ariadne, 2006) analysis of the gravitational pull of the Amazoogle forces suggests a flattened networked world, a wave of social tools, and pervasive computing and communications in our working and learning lives.  Rather than being defined primarily by collections or the services that support them, the library is challenged to become more engaged in the processes of teaching, learning, and research - a true partner in support of the academic mission.  Dempsey has suggested that an important focus for libraries is attention to services that save time, are sensitive to user workflow, and are targeted and engaging.  As he puts it, libraries need to get "in the flow" of the user.

Addressing these and other emerging challenges Dempsey will be the keynote speaker at the 2007 CIC libraries conference to be held March 19 – 20 on the campus of the University of Minnesota.  He will be joined by Peter Morville, author of Ambient Findability; Glenn Peterson of the Hennepin County Library and Jenny Levine of ALA discussing gaming in libraries; innovative information providers on the sources of data and inspiration they use for product and strategic planning; as well as speakers on blogging; Sakai; Second Life; and what NextGen librarians see as emerging needs and opportunities.

In our discussions, both formal and informal, we will seek to respond to the following questions:

Registration forms will be sent to the University Librarian’s office of each CIC institution to designate participants.
