Eligibility Criteria

The FLEP 2008 application period will close on February 8, 2008 though please note exceptions to the rule which are listed on the FLEP main webpage and on the application.

Applicants must be pursuing a graduate degree at one of the participating 8 CIC institutions:
Indiana University, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Iowa, University of Michigan, Michigan State University, University of Minnesota, Ohio State University, and Purdue University.

Language study may be undertaken at any other participating CIC university. FLEP scholarships may not be used for language study at a student's home institution* and must be used for a credit bearing "less commonly taught" language course.

FLEP awards may be held concurrently with other awards, if permitted by home institution or other awarding agency policy.

All FLEP applicants must apply for their intended language course on their own. Receiving a FLEP award does not guarantee admittance into any course - it just provides funds for living expenses. Students are advised to conduct their own research and abide by the specific deadlines of their intended language course. This will mean that you will be applying for your course before receiving FLEP notification.

In particular, please note that all study abroad programs have specific deadlines and even some summer language institutes fill up fast and have deadlines. Also, study abroad programs have deposit deadlines which may impact your decision especially if your campus committee has an extended deadline and selection process. Please do let your FLEP Campus Coordinator know should this impact your plans.

FLEP recipients may also apply to the CIC Traveling Scholar Program which enables graduate students to pay tuition and fees at their home institution while attending another CIC university. More details can be found here: http://www.cic.net/programs/TravelingScholars/index.shtml

Please note though that students wanting to use Traveling Scholar for a study abroad program to study a less commonly taught language may have to look for a CIC program that has separate tuition and program fees for if the study abroad program fees are based on actual program costs then Traveling Scholar may not be approved as some campuses waive tuition all together for study abroad.
